Deepfake voice scam tricks bank chairman into wiring 95 million euros
A WhatsApp message and an AI-cloned voice call were enough. Prosecutors have recovered about half the money.
The chairman of an Italian bank transferred 95 million euros (about $108 million) after receiving a WhatsApp message followed by a phone call in which AI was used to clone the voices of senior executives. Prosecutors in Milan have so far recovered around 53 million euros.
Security experts say voice cloning now needs only a few seconds of audio. Their advice is simple: verify unusual money requests through a second, known channel, set up code words within families and offices, and never act on urgency alone.
